As many of you know, one part of our mission here at Abu Dhabi Cultural Center is to continue the education of our members long past the point where their formal schooling stops!
As part of that mission, we offer a number of courses, programs, and online classes for you to take part in.
One of our favorites, and most popular ongoing programs is our book club, which we run in 3-4 installments each year.
We’re pleased to announce today that we have scheduled the 4th and final book club of the year, for November and December of 2015.
The books we will be reading are:
November: The Catcher in the Rye
This book recounts the story of Holden Caufield, as he is expelled from his preparatory school and journeys back to his home in New York City before the Christmas holiday. Written in the first person, from Holden’s perspective, the book is part coming of age story and part glimpse into the mind of an individual who clearly does not perceive the world around him as it is actually taking place, hiding in his own thoughts of grandeur, without recognizing the serious realities and problem he faces.
December: The Grapes of Wrath
The novel is an iconic depiction of the struggles of the 1930s, as it follows a working class family from the Dust Bowl hardships of the midwest to the promise of work in California.
They undertake the journey, only to find that not everything is as easy and bountiful as they thought it was.
If there’s ever a book to make you feel grateful for simple things in life, this it it.
We hope you enjoy these two classic modern American novels. If you haven’t already registered for the book club, you can sign up by contacting Yaffef at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Participation is free and discussions will take place both in person and online, so there’s no excuse not to join in!
